Mounts Bay Singers
History
Mounts Bay Singers was formed in 2001 by Sheila Farmer. Sheila had accumulated a repertoire of music for a mixed-voice choir by contemporary composers/arrangers and had no choir to try it out with. A good mix of people of all ages and experience joined and the membership has been growing ever since. Meetings used to be held in Penzance Orchestral Society's Band Room but transferred to Humphry Davy School when it became a specialist music college. The Deputy Musical Director, from the beginning, has been a member of the choir, Stephen Lawry, who is also Musical Director of both the Mousehole Male Voice Choir and the Penzance Orpheus Ladies Choir. Originally the choir had no permanent accompanist and some pieces were sung a capella, whilst others were accompanied by Mavis Harper, James Wilson and Sheila herself. The talented Paul Marks Joffe joined us as accompanist for periods before and after studying at Cardiff University. Mavis Harper, and Sheila Farmer accompanied the choir in his absence. Richard Braebrook was the accompanist during the Cheshire tour and Mavis Harper during the Isle of Wight visit. When Paul left, recently, to pursue other projects, the choir was lucky to welcome Bridgit England as accompanist in his place. Derek Jones was the Honorary Treasurer for a number of years. Sarah Hall gave choir members invaluable help by teaching music theory. Past choir members who have performed solos at concerts include Paul Marks Joffe, Gwen Johns, Colin Mitchel, Gary Beman, Sylvia and Bob Quixley and Ashley Cohen. A number of concerts are given annually in various local venues and the choir has undertaken tours to Italy, Cheshire, the Isle of Wight, Ireland and Wales. It has sung in a Mass in St Mark's Basilica, Venice, in Truro Cathedral, in Shrewsbury Abbey, Llandaff Cathedral, at the Eden Project and at the beautiful Millstreet Country Park, near Killarney, Ireland.
